Angels and Geekery

I'm working on the Ordinary Angels series production bible, and I'm learning more about angelic lore than I ever thought I would.  More than I knew existed.  There's some cool stuff in the various apocryphal books of contemporary biblical-era lore.  For instance, bet a lot of my readers didn't know that King Solomon was given a mystical ring that gave him the power to bind and control fallen angels, and he used them as slave labor to build his great temple.  That's some straight-up D&D action right there.

That's right.  The Temple of Solomon, built by demon slave labor.

Who knew??

Speaking of D&D, this ran across my Facebook filter today.  I find it funny because I'm a gamer who loves football, but finds fantasy football somehow geekier than RPGs.

The Ballad of G.I. Joe

This Funny-or-Die video was circulating on Facebook this morning. It is full of win on many levels, whether you're a fan of the 1980s-era animated G.I. Joe, or just love playing spot-the-celebrity. And, yes, that's Alan Tudyk as Shipwreck.

How Appropos

This is just too perfect for the last couple days. Thanks to TFMD for sending this lolcat my way.

Tuesday and the Gay Salsa Explosion

As I just explained in a very detailed email to TFMD, I crack me up.

Had an awesome weekend with the family. After TFMD awoke on Monday morning, I took her to brunch at Easy Street, and then we did the week's grocery shopping. We moved very slowly, as it was apparent finishing a bottle of port after several drinks at the concert was probably not the best decision. We made a pact to watch each other's back and practice a bit more temperance in the future.

The kids are home all this week for mid-winter break. Despite this, I am getting work done. Finished the audition side for a character in the first Duo short, for which we are casting this week.

I was about to head off to get a shower when a friend pinged me in instant messenger, so I stayed for a short conversation. At one point, however, I got a bit peckish, so I went to grab some chips and salsa. We get this nice, fresh, chunky stuff from the cold case at the QFC. And it lives on the top shelf of the fridge. And when I went to grab it, it slipped out of my fingers, off the shelf and came down on the kitchen floor, splitting the bottom open and spattering salsa everywhere. It looked like a bizarre crime scene. It was on my sweats (from neck to ankle), on the underside of the fridge drawers, on the cabinets across the kitchen. I would love to see a ballistics report on this particular murder.

So, after spending the next ten minutes cleaning said crime scene, I returned to the office, where my friend was wondering what had happened to me. The conversation proceeded, with me apologizing for the delay and assuring my friend that a salsa explosion, which sounds like it should be FUN, strangely was not. My friend then expressed sympathy over the incident, using the term "gay" in the perjorative (which I neither use nor condone, but am totally guilty of uttering "boss", "rad" and "bitchin'" upon occasion, because developmentally I'm still in 7th grade). I then mused how "Gay Salsa Explosion" sounded like a cultural event in south Florida. Kinda like Carnival, only... not.

Arriba.

Random

So as I was chatting online with Mr. Creth today, he hit me with this. Apparently Microsoft has an application that will take a vocal line and automatically set it to music. Which has led to a number of really bizarre (and some quite funny) results. This, by far, is my favorite...

I Predict... Short Back and Sides.

So this little retail space on California Avenue SW has been giving us a lot of mirth as we go past. Because the neon is in the same font, the same size, and at the same level in the adjacent front windows, it kinda looks like an all-in-one service. Especially at night.

Not sure what your hair's future holds? Visit the Psychic Barber! He'll tell you your folicular future while trimming up those sideburns.

Oh, and maybe tell you where you left that spare set of car keys.

Dan Savage on Colbert

Know what I love more than Stephen Colbert? Our own Dan Savage on Stephen Colbert (mmm - hot Dan-on-Stephen action!). In this case, Dan talks about California's recent civil rights travesty, Prop 8, and actually makes the normally unflappable Colbert break character.

With the unpacking and organizing here at home, I've been behind in my Daily Show/Colbert Report viewing, so I must thank the lovely and talented Stephen Rader for putting this up.

And here's an old sketch from the oft-forgotten Dana Carvey Show, with Colbert and Steve Carell, just because it's one of the most brilliant premises ever written for variety television...

Thursday Morning Engrish

I first got hooked on Engrish when I was the Art Director at Hyperbole Studios in 2000. It was often a wonderfully bizarre break in the otherwise soul-sucking day that was life in the videogame industry (to be fair and financial issues aside, Hyperbole was probably the most fun I've ever had working for someone else). Anyway, being an amateur linguist, I've always been amused by the peculiarities of how languages work, and how they really don't work together sometimes.

And while it's probably bad form to make fun of non-English-speaking Asian cultures as they attempt to communicate in English, at least they're trying, which is more than we do over here most of the time. I think that's because we follow Homer Simpson's advice to his son Bart: "You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is 'never try'."

Heh. Failure is funny.

It's all because of the monkeys. Damn monkeys.

I totally would have worn this three years ago.

Funny Porn & Live-In Girlfriends

Our hero, the erstwhile Captain Hammer from Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog, the great Nathan Fillion, stars in a very funny viral video from the Gunn brothers (a couple of which were responsible for The Specials). It's a parody of crappy 1980s shot-on-video porn. Good stuff - thanks, Gavin!

And also, Raechelle is moving in with us on November 8th. And it has nothing to do with the fact that I show her funny Nathan Fillion videos.

Sick Pumpkins

I wanted to share this with my readers because: a) it's a great concept for Halloween decor (especially at a frat house); and b) it reminds me of my own Halloweens past.

This was sent to me in an email forward from my stepmom, so I don't have the original photo credit. If the photographer/carver(s) find this on my blog, I assure you no copyright infringement is intended - kudos to you for a brilliant concept!

Me Too

Man, I hate doing "me too" posts, but Mark Bruno just featured this over on Signal vs. Noise, and I had to share it with my readers. Funny thing is, while the little girl is super cute and all, for me this video is all about the editing once it goes into the beatbox segment. Amazing.

I'll post some actual content tomorrow. Today has been a bit overwhelming on the health front, and I need to process.

I Must Share...

Classic Engrish, right here. It is the cool and smart. For relaxing pleasant time. You must check it.

It's So On!

Kayleigh just walked in the door from school. I went to give her a hug and take the mail from her. She kicked off her shoes and ditched her backpack, and the brief conversation went like this:

Me: Hi!
K: Hi!
Me: Happy Friday!
K: YOU'RE a Happy Friday!
Me: YOU'RE a Happy Friday!

(pause)

Me: Your MOM'S a Happy Friday!
K: Oh, it's ON now!

Sigh. Good times.

For Raechelle

(She who cheers me up with lovely emails throughout the morning...)
